Picket Wire Canyonlands Dinosaur Tracks Guided Touir
As discussed by Director Jim Jenista at the Kickoff Meeting, we were hoping that the "dinosaur tracks" guided auto tour would be offered this year, after having been shut down all last year and this spring due to COVID.
We are pleased to announce that the Comanche National Grasslands office of the US Forest Service in La Junta has opened just six tour dates for the remainder of the season for the Picket Wire Canyonlands Guided Auto Tour!
Based on member feedback Jim has reserved a slot for himself on Sat Oct 2 and again a week later on Sat Oct 9. As of noon on Sun Aug 29 there are only 15 tickets left on the first date and 20 on the second, and the tours are open to the general public, not just our club, so if you would like to join us on one of those dates (or on your own on a different date), the website address to register and make reservations is https://www.recreation.gov/ticket/234166/ticket/138. Adults are $15, Youth 6-12 $7.50, and Children 5-and-Under are Free. Tickets (less the $1.00 administrative fee) are refundable up to two weeks prior.
There is a list of instructions and requirements you must read and acknowledge when you reserve your tickets, including having 4WD with high clearance (the road into and out of the canyon is an easy-to-moderate Group 1 trail). For those interested in driving to the canyon rim after the guided tour ends, Jim will lead a short run to an overlook of the canyon we'll have just exited.
If you make reservations to attend, be SURE to e-mail Jim at firstname.lastname@example.org with the date you've selected and number of tickets you've reserved so he can include you in additional updates as the tour dates approach.
This is an exciting opportunity to walk in the exact footprints of dinosaurs, and there are a few other educational stops on the tour to explore geologic formations, an abandoned settlement, and a restored river ranch. We hope you will agree! If you have questions, please contact Jim by email: email@example.com or by phone: 719-200-4757.
